Your resume is an important tool to getting a new job, and if yours is not adequate enough, then you will be at a severe disadvantage when applying to new positions. Fortunately, you are not alone in this quest because our experts are dedicated to finding ways to make every resume better. Skills and Highlights should be the same section
You should absolutely include a portion of your resume devoted to your skillset, so you are able to get valuable keywords onto the page. Some people will choose to title this section Skills while others will call it Highlights, but no matter what, they are the same. This sample resume has two different sections that contain the same type of information, so it would be best to just combine them into one to conserve space. This part of your resume should come immediately after your summary and right before you talk about your work history.
Use bullet points for Experience
Making sure your resume adheres to standard resume guidelines is essential when submitting to companies, and most hiring managers expect to see bullet points for your work experience. The same way this sample resume uses a bulleted list to talk about her skillset, she would want to use the same bullets when describing her work history. Aim for at least five points per place of employment
You want to provide the hiring manager with an ample amount of information, so he or she knows exactly what you did and what you are skilled in. Each of the workplaces only has one sentence, and although they are all very descriptive sentences, it is generally recommended to have a minimum of five bullet points. If you are having trouble reaching that minimum, then really think hard about all you did and accomplished at each position. Chances are good that there is plenty you have done at each job that can be discussed.
Use a variety of verbs to begin your bullet points
Although they are for different positions, we see the following two points given for this sample’s Experience section:
Both of these points begin with Assisted, and an employer may think you are lazy if you use the same words over and over again. Therefore, it is in your best interest to vary up your word choices a bit and take that thesaurus down off the shelf if you need to. Only one of the above points would need to be changed, so we could simply rewrite one of them like this:
