Resumes act as the keys to unlocking new doors. We understand that writing a quality resume can be difficult, so we’ve partnered with experts in order to give you inside information into how they would improve real resumes. Use our feedback from this example to build your own reading and math tutor resume.
Use a skills section to lengthen a resume
A skills section lets you highlight specific qualities that you bring to a job. Most applicants will want to include a skills section even if they don’t need to lengthen their resume. However, doing so can be especially useful when your resume is too short. This example isn’t quite a full page, so we recommend expanding it by taking some of the information from the summary and listing it under skills instead. The change would look something like this: Summary Compassionate, patient and innovative teacher seeking math and reading tutor position. Skilled at connecting with and motivating students with individualized needs. Skills
As you can see, we’ve retained all the same information, but merely changed it to be more easily readable. Since this applicant had listed specific skills in the summary, it works better to list them in a skills section instead.
Aim for five to eight bullet points per employment position
In the experience section, it’s always a good idea to detail your job duties and responsibilities by using bullet points. Having five to eight bullet points is ideal. If it seems hard to reach this number, remind yourself that the hiring manager doesn’t see you at work every day. What might he or she not consider? In order to lengthen the job information in the sample resume, we would alter each one in the following manner. Wrong: Nathan and Susie Rose Reading and Math Tutor
Right: Nathan and Susie Rose Reading and Math Tutor
Now the hiring manager will have a better sense of what this applicant individually contributed to her workplace.
List education in descending chronological order
Education should always start with the most recent degree and then work its way down. This is especially true when the newer degree is higher ranked. With that in mind, we would change this applicant’s education section to read as follows: Wrong: California State Polytechnic University Pomona, CA Behavioral Science Bachelor of Arts National University Costa Mesa, CA Special Education Master of Science Education Specialist Education Specialist Permit (preliminary). Clear Crosscultural and Language Development Certificate and California Teaching Credential Right: National University Costa Mesa, CA Special Education Master of Science Education Specialist California State Polytechnic University Pomona, CA Behavioral Science Bachelor of Arts For the rest of this applicant’s educational information, she would want to list where she received, or is receiving, her certificate and teaching credential.
