Have a strong professional summary
Your professional summary needs to summarize your resume in about 3-5 sentences. It should also pertain to the job that you are applying for. The summary shouldn’t be a general statement that could be turned into a fast food restaurant or a law office. It should reflect the job that you are applying for. The summary on this sample isn’t bad, but it isn’t quite long or strong enough. Make sure you mention how much experience you have in the first sentence, then go on to summarize your experience and qualifications. Right Dedicated and focused assistant with 5 years of experience. Excels at customer service and multitasking. Self-motivated and reliable. Professional and courteous with customers. Always maintains a positive attitude, and is ready and willing to learn. The second professional summary has that added punch that it needs. Just a few words were reworded to sound more professional and it honed in on the strengths of the applicant.
Choose appropriate skills for the job at hand
You want to pick 10-12 of the best skills or highlights to list on your resume. They should pertain to the job you are applying for. If you aren’t going to be working with computers, your employer isn’t going to care if you are a computer whiz. This sample resume has CPR training, first aid training, and a bachelor’s in psychology listed. While those are all impressive things, they might not necessarily matter for the job. Tell your employer why you are qualified to do the specific job. Brag about being able to do certain tasks better than everyone else. Tell your employer what you can do and why you’d be the best one for the job. List skills that show how well you work with other people, lead a team, and do your job.
Don’t go overboard on experience
This sample resume does a great job listing previous experience. The jobs are in the right order, and the tasks at the previous jobs are listed with bullet points. Just make sure that you don’t list so much that your resume becomes overwhelming. You don’t need to list every little thing you did at your employment. It might not seem like a big difference, but when several pieces of employment history are cut down by a couple lines, it makes the resume looks much cleaner.
