When a job opening comes up, there are going to be dozens or even hundreds of people all vying to get just one position. It can be a lot of competition, but you can edge the odds in your favor by taking the time to craft a stellar resume. To help you out with this endeavor, we had our experts review a professional janitor resume sample and make notes regarding what can be improved and what lessons can be learned.
Every position under work experience should be formatted using bullet points
There is a certain structure that should be maintained on all resumes, and when you are writing about your previous work experience, you want to talk about your duties in a bulleted list. Each point should be given its on point, and this will make the section much easier for the hiring manager to read. On this sample resume, we would want to reformat the material given for A1+ Professional Cleaning Services to look like this:
However, there is still more that can be done with this list.
Always use the correct tenses
Since A1+ Professional Cleaning Services is this person’s current position, the information given for it should be written in the present tense. Likewise, information being given for a previous job should be written in the past tense. Therefore, we would want to rewrite the above list to go like this:
Include as many details as possible
Your resume should read like an account of someone’s actual experience. You do not want it to read like a simple job description, and the best way to improve a resume is to include specific information about the kind of work you did. This sample resume is for a janitor, and since he was a janitor we can reasonably assume he did stuff like sweep floors and dust furniture. To make this resume truly shine, we could include more quantifiable material like this.
This list is so much more interested to read, and it is more likely to stand out in the mind of the reader.
High school education can be omitted if it has been a while
The only times when it is really necessary to include information about high school is if you are still a teenager or just graduated. However, if it has been a while, as can be observed on this sample resume, then it would be in your best interest to simply leave it out. The fact that you graduated from high school is not as impressive as your actual work experience, and that is the material you should focus on. Since this sample resume writer got his high school diploma a while ago, it would be preferable to remove it so that more space can be spent discussing work experience. Writing a resume should not have to be an ordeal, and by learning the ins and outs of resume writing, the job application process is going to go much more smoothly.
