Writing your resume is an important part of the application process, especially considering it is often your employer’s first impression of you. In order to help you with this process, we have reviewed a Production Floor Operator resume sample and pointed out areas for improvement. Be sure to pay close attention to these changes and avoid making the same mistakes in your own resume writing.
Extend the summary
One of the most common mistakes applicants make is failing to notice the potential of a well-written summary. More than any, this section can set you apart from other applicants because it is your opportunity to showcase unique skills and experiences. Think of the summary as a sales pitch that can hook your reader’s attention and motivate him or her to continue reading the rest of your resume. In this resume sample, the applicant has written only one line when in fact, the summary can contain up to 6 lines. The strongest summaries use vivid language presented in fragments.
The highlights section is your opportunity to pack your resume with key phrases that will describe you as a professional. It is not wise to list as many descriptions as you can think of, though. Each column of the highlights section should have no more than 7 items listed. In order to strengthen this section, the applicant needs to keep only the most descriptive terms.
Always use bullets for listing items
The format of your resume is one of the most important factors. Chances are your employer will have several resumes to read through, and you want to make sure yours is as easy to navigate as possible. This means that each description should be presented in a visually-pleasing manner, and using bullet points is the most effective way of doing so. Notice the difference between these two sections: WRONG: Experience Kelly ServicesMarch 2012 to Current Laborer Suffolk, VA Identified inefficiencies and made recommendations for process improvements. Gave solutions through Personal work experience. worked vigorously since my first day hired .Helped save Kraft company $350,000 of below quality product . operates packaging processors and keeps record of product made, shipped, reworked RIGHT: Experience Kelly ServicesMarch 2012 to Current Laborer Suffolk, VA
Notice how adjusting the format can immediately improve the readability of the text.
Proofread your resume
Proofreading your writing is as important as any other step in your job application. Because your resume represents you as a professional individual, the writing should be held to the highest standards. The employer reading your work may be put off by even the smallest typos because it might appear that you did not give enough care or attention to the application. In the example above, the applicant has made a few errors that can easily be fixed. For example, the writing should all be in the present tense because the position described is a current one. Although this may seem like a minor error, ensuring the consistency of tenses allows your writing to become stronger and clearer. Don’t hesitate to enlist the help of professionals.
