If you are getting back into the job market to find a new line of work, then you are going to need a stellar resume to impress potential employers. There are numerous ways that you can leave a bad impression by making a simple mistake on your professional resume, and that is why you should follow the advice of our experts. They examined a production assistant resume sample to find all the things that can be made better, so keep these rules in the back of your head the next time you write a resume.
A summary and skill section should be included
There is only so much a hiring manager can learn about you by seeing where you worked at in the past and where you went to school. This sample resume is lacking a brief summary at the very top that provides a concise overview of your experiences, skillset and personality traits. This sample is also missing a section devoted to her skills. A skills section is great for quickly listing off all the qualities you have earned over the years, and it is an excellent place for adding valuable keywords the reader is going to be looking for. There are other parts that are optional, including accomplishments and licenses sections.
Always include an end date for every place of work
On this resume sample, we see that Alper Jewish Community Center Camp has July 2012 listed for it, but we do not know if that is when she started working there or stopped working there. If it is a start date, then we have no clue if she still works there or if she quit a while ago. The same thing is done for her time as a Production Coordinator Production Assistant. You want to make it absolutely clear to the hiring manager when you worked at each job and that you do not leave him or her guessing.
Be mindful of careless formatting mistakes
A minor flaw with formatting may not seem like a big deal, but when you are competing against dozens of other applicants for the same job, you need to make it transparent that you are the best candidate for the job. This means having a keen eye for detail and not making simple mistakes like this sample resume does for the material given for her time as an Intern/Production Assistant at Alper Jewish Community Center Camp.
Some of these bullet points are just continuations of a previous point, so you would want to combine them together like this:
This looks so much better, and it saves space.
Always go in chronological order
Once we get down into education, we see that a degree she got in 2008 is listed before a degree she received in 2011. Whether you are talking about your work experience or education, you always want to start with whatever is most recent. You would then want to work your way backwards chronologically from there. The reason for this is that you want to start with material that is most relevant to where you are in your life now. A poor resume can be made to be absolutely spectacular with a few minor changes.
