Applying for a new position means making the best first impression possible with your resume. In order to help you do this, we have reviewed a Printing Professional resume sample and have pointed out areas that need improvement or modification. If you pay close attention to these changes, you can avoid making the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
Always use bullet points for listing items
The formatting of your resume is one of its most important traits. Because your potential employer will be reading through a lot of resumes, he or she will not have tons of time to devote to each one. Therefore you want to make sure time is maximized by reading the information you have presented rather than trying to sort through it. A resume that is disorganized or unclear does not bode well for an employer who wants to obtain a brief overview of your professional identity. In this sample resume, the applicant has listed a brief paragraph under the accomplishments section. A simple edit of adding bullet notes for each item could significantly improve the format. Notice the difference: WRONG: Accomplishments Identified and resolved mechanical issues, which saved the company $ in revenue.Planned, directed, coordinated and assigned manpower to efficiently meet production requirements.Contributed to an annual 10% increase in productivity through improvements in operations, quality, safety and administration.Received Award for exemplary service. RIGHT: Accomplishments
Notice how adding bullet points greatly improves the clarity of the presented information. Remember also when listing accomplishments and awards, specificity is crucial. The applicant has offered relevant and noteworthy information, but should mention a specific amount of money in the first item. If you do not have at least 3 items to mention here, note that offering this information under the experience section is equally acceptable.
Offer descriptive information with each job experience
The previous work experience section is perhaps the most important on your resume. Your potential employer will be most concerned with not necessarily the title of your job but rather the experiences gained from each. Therefore, you do not want to simply list your former positions because doing so does not paint a vivid picture of your professional history. Each previous job should be its own section with at least 3 bullet notes of descriptive information. In this sample resume, the applicant has mentioned vague responsibilities with some jobs and with others has not listed any information at all. The entry associated with Segerdahl Corp. is the strongest, and the applicant should model all entries after this one. Note that bullet points should be used in the experience section as well.
Pay attention to spacing
The overall appearance of your resume is important, and therefore you want to be mindful of spacing and formatting. Notice how the summary section is separated into two statements rather than a small paragraph. This looks a little disorganized and can be easily fixed. The dates under the experience section are also difficult to read and can be listed in the following format: GT Massage & Skin Care April 2010 October 2013 Wheaton, IL Manager/Owner Using margins consistently is an appropriate way to keep your resume organized.
