If you are applying for a new position, it is important that your resume is as well-crafted as possible because it will be your employer’s first impression of you. In order to help you out with the process, we have studied a sample resume and pointed out areas that need rewriting or rearranging. Be sure to take note of these to avoid making the same mistakes yourself. With a strong resume, you can have an excellent shot at getting a first interview.
The summary is a perfect way to sell your skills or accomplishments. Often the summary is the first section on a resume, and so it should make a bold statement that is representative of your qualities. The applicant has only written one line here when this section can be up to four to six lines.
Pay Attention to Formatting
The overall look of the resume should be consistent and professional. In this press operator example resume, the applicant has listed some of his highlights with a bullet point, and some without. Notice also the unnecessary gap between the Highlights and Accomplishments section. Consistency is key. If the employer is distracted by formatting, he or she might not take the resume as seriously.
Avoid repeating the same word
In the sample press operator resume, the applicant uses many of the same words repetitively. Notice in the Highlights section that the word knowledge is used twice. This is not a major error; however, using a variety of words can make your application more memorable. Knowledge can be replaced with words such as expertise or proficiency.
Always use bullets for listing
Going along with the idea of proper formatting means using bullets whenever you are listing different items in a section. This improves the readability of your resume and will allow the employer to remember important details about you even from the quickest of glances. When talking about job experience that is still current, be sure to use the present tense. Notice the difference in these two sections: WRONG: EXPERIENCE AKRON BEACON JOURNAL Akron, OH Press Operator 08/1995 to Current Monitored team progress to complete projects within deadlines. Accurately set-up fold, adjusting roll mechanisms, tension and guide devices. Met production schedules and printing deadlines. Examined printed copy for printing errors, correct position on paper and registration. Collaborated with technicians to diagnose equipment breakdowns and address quality issues. RIGHT: EXPERIENCE AKRON BEACON JOURNAL Akron, OH Press Operator 08/1995 to Current
Minor changes in formatting and wording can truly make a difference in the readability of your resume. Don’t let these small changes detract from your work experience.
Accomplishment section should have at least three bullet points
If the accomplishment section has fewer than three bullet points, these items can be listed under the expertise section. Also as a rule of thumb, try to save the accomplishment section for noteworthy awards. Also note that the applicant has not used bullet points here. Creating and editing a resume is an important process, and it never hurts to consult the experts.
