Searching for a new job is never an easy process, but there are measures you can take to give yourself an edge when companies start making hiring decisions. One of the best things you can do in the application process is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of sample resumes composed by people in your chosen field. We have gone ahead and examined a Police Officer resume sample and elaborated on a few of the major issues so you know what to avoid.
Use the first person throughout
Though this is a professional document and should be written as such, you also dont want the language you use in your resume to be so rigid that it seems like a robot composed it from a list of personal facts. When you use the third person to refer to yourself, as this applicant does frequently in the summary section, you take the risk of the hiring manager tossing your resume aside because of the distance and lack of enthusiasm it implies. Use the first person instead, as this has the positive effect of taking direct ownership of your experiences and accomplishes, a quality valued by any reputable employer.
Avoid the block of text
While you certainly want the experience section of your resume to be the longest, you dont want to pack each previous job full of so many details that it becomes cluttered, as is the case with this sample resume. With a job like a police officer that is so integral to public safety, it is certainly a good idea to demonstrate all the aspects of a job with which you are familiar. However, it is preferable to put these aspects in bulleted form to make them more readable. Recruiters will take note of your neatness and, if you are called in to interview for the position, they will be able to easily find and reference your specific experiences. You dont want the recruiters to take one look at your resume and pass you by simply because you didnt take the time to make things concise. WRONG: Implemented defensive tactics and physical restraints to maintain the safety and security of personnel and the general public. Safely transported inmates to and from work sites. Verified warrants, conducted searches and fingerprinted inmates. Apprehended escapees safely while following proper techniques. Received property from incoming inmates, provided receipts and inspected items for contraband. RIGHT:
Place emphasis on higher education
Unless the only step of education you have completed is a high school diploma, there is no need to list your high school in the education section of your resume. Any recruiter these days knows that if you have already stated that youve attended some institution where you received higher education or advanced training in the field, you have already received your high school diploma. Though it certainly pays to be thorough, as the writer of this resume sample clearly is, eliminating unnecessary high school information leaves room to elaborate on your other schooling or job experience. You could have enough room to add a section for your awards or accomplishments, which looks good to recruiters in any field. Now that youve seen some of the issues in this Police Officer resume sample and know how to rectify them, youre ready to apply these tips to your own application.
