In a world with so many people looking to enter the workforce, it is becoming more difficult to distinguish yourself in the application process. One of the best ways to ensure your resume is the best it can be is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of those submitted by others in your field. Together with a group of experts, we have given you a head start on this process by addressing a few of the major issues in a patient care technician resume sample so that you can avoid them in your own document.
Include a summary section
It is certainly the case that a hiring manager wants to see a strong experience section. However, this does not mean that you shouldas this applicant doessacrifice the inclusion of other sections like the summary in order to include as much work description as possible. It may seem that including a brief four to six line paragraph about things you will be explaining later on is unnecessary, but it is one of the quickest ways to make a great first impression on a reader. Having a summary section that effectively gives an elevator pitch on your abilities can make the difference between an intrigued recruiter and one who chooses to pass you by instead. Touch on highlights of your experience, a few of your major skill sets and some of your best personality traits to get the most out of the space you have.
Highlight your abilities with a skills section
After the experience section, the skills section probably bears the most weight in terms of illustrating your competence. Using a table format that lists between three and eight bulleted items per column, you can load this section up with words and phrases directly related to the patient care technician field. In some ways, this list of skills serves as a kind of recruiter’s checklist of desirable traits, ensuring that you fulfill the basic requirements of the position. It is fine to include a few soft skills or personality traits here along with the practical abilities, but just be sure that everything has some strong relevance for the duties the new job will require.
Use bullets to separate job duties
While you may have a lot to say in your experience section, you should still follow the standard professional format of using bullets to separate individual activities, not to simply distinguish between whole positions as this applicant does. The idea is to make the text easier for recruiters to read, something not accomplished by using large blocks of text. Done right, this also has the subtle effect of making your duties appear more numerous and by extension, showing that you are capable of handling a complex position. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if the recruiter should decide to bring you in for an interview, he or she can easily reference your resume and ask you to elaborate, giving you a chance to show your confidence and interpersonal skills.
