Cut out unnecessary sections
Reference sections are no longer expected on professional resumes. Doubly redundant are reference sections that merely indicate that references are available upon request. You do not need to include either of these things. WRONG: REFERENCES Professional and personal references available upon request. CONCLUSION I believe that my professional skills and 35 years of experience will be beneficial and complimentary to your staff, as well as to the goals that you expect to achieve in the future. RIGHT: PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES EDUCATION LICENSES Neither do you need to have a conclusion. Conclusions are not required nor looked for by employers, who will be far more interested in other relevant sections such as your professional experience and your licenses.
Use bullet points
The only section that can acceptably have a paragraph format is the summary section. The rest of the sections of your resume, including work experience, should utilize bullet points. Your summary section is different from a skills section
Summary sections should function like a written 30-second elevator pitch about why you are the right person for the job. They should run for around four to six lines, but no more than that. WRONG: PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY Bilingual licensed OTR and enthusiastic team player committed to delivering quality care. Driven to achieve exceptional patient outcomes as a key member of a multidisciplinary case-management team. With seventeen years of specialized exposure to development and implementation of administrative policies/procedures, and internal controls. Nineteen years in private practice as consultant to rehab unit’s at S.N.F, L.T.C., and extended transitional care facilities, MR/DD group homes and day programs in pediatrics, adult, and geriatric settings. Proven skills in planning, analyzing, organizing, directing, controlling, and innovating. Strong back ground in the following committees; Advisory Board Member of home health Care Programs; Discharge Planning; Utility; Budgeting; Quality Assurance; and record Audit Review Committees. An OTR well versed in a broad range of programming, treatments, modalities, splinting and positioning for restoring function and mitigating disability. Total professional experience as Occupational Therapist – 35 years. This summary section is extremely long. However, it contains a plethora of relevant information that is important for potential employers. When this is the case, split up your summary section and design a skills section to follow.
