Crafting a quality resume is vitally important in order to land the right job. We’ve taken this resume sample to our experts so we can give you conclusive information about what to improve. This feedback can help you write your own operating staff nursing resume.
List more than one bullet point for each job
When you list your work history, you’ll want to incorporate bullet points in order to highlight specific experience you gained on the job. Having more than one bullet point is important for displaying exactly what you did, as a job title can only say so much. The sample resume had only one bullet point for the first and last positions, while all the other positions were much more thorough. Wrong: Registered Nurse Feb 2012 to Current Mount Sinai Medical Center ? New York, NY
Right: Registered Nurse Apr 2011 to Current Patten Health Clinic at US Merchant Marine Academy – NSLIJ ? Kings Point, NY
In the second example, the applicant is thorough about her job duties, which gives the potential employer a better understanding of her skills and expertise. Note in this example that we also changed administered to present tense, as this is a position the applicant still has.
List sections in order of importance
Since a hiring manager generally looks over a resume quickly, it’s important to list the most important sections at the top and then work your way down. For any job that requires licenses, you’ll want to put these toward the bottom, as they don’t make you stand out from others in your specific field. In this sample, Licenses is listed just below the professional summary, but instead it should be listed after education.
Avoid listing only one item in a section
For the best flow, and to avoid having any section look incomplete, try to have at least two things in each section. If something is standing alone, there’s a good chance it should actually be somewhere else. In the sample, the applicant has Additional Information in its own category, but since it’s regarding honors for a degree, it should be moved to the education section, like so: Education and Training Bachelor of Science, Nursing 2007 Long Island University ? New York, NY Bachelor of Arts, Psychology 2004 Binghamton University Binghamton, NY Alpha Chi National College Honor Society Binghamton University Now the resume doesn’t need the Additional Information section at all. Notice that we also changed Brooklyn to New York, as Brooklyn is an area and not a city. Lastly, we removed the applicant’s beginning date for her psychology degree, as only the graduation date is needed.
Use strong action words and avoid repetition
In this example, the applicant uses the term was responsible for at the beginning of many of her bullet points. This phrase, along with other dead phrases such as was accountable for, should be replaced with stronger phrases, and with more variety. Instead of making it sound like a responsibility was thrust on you or plopped into your lap, you’ll want to make it sound more intentional. Wrong:
Now each bullet point has a unique beginning word, and each phrase has a strong action word. Keep these pointers in mind when creating your own operating room staff nursing application. You can quickly build your own standout resume with QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
