However, there are certain elements that are important to include, as well as best practices for display information in various formats. After consulting with expert resume writers, we evaluated this online marketing manager resume sample. Take a look at the mistakes and corrections to help you to make the best choice in developing your resume.
Utilize a Work Summary
Though objective statements were once quite popular, they have been replaced by work summaries in today’s resumes. Where an objective statement focuses on what you desire to gain from a position, a work summary shares the traits, characteristics and experience that you will be able to contribute to a company. This proves to be more effective in catching the attention of hiring managers. Your work summary should be short, around three to five sentences, and showcase your greatest skills and accomplishments that relate to the position. WRONG: I am interested in a position that could utilize and/or enhance my current skills and that will greatly benefit the mission and services of the company/organization. RIGHT: Dedicated online marketing manager with extensive sales experience and strong administrative capabilities. Able to plan and manage several projects simultaneously to exceed company goals. Personable character allows for cultivating productive business relationships. Seeking to advance in a managerial position with a reputable company.
Summarize Your Skills
The skills section should be short and sweet. You should endeavor to use as few words as possible in describing your skills. You will be elaborating on your skills in the experience section, so it may help to think of the skills section as an overview of the key characteristics that you desire to bring attention to in the experience portion. WRONG:
Fill In the Sections
This is not to say that you should make anything up, however if you are going to include sections make sure that you put them to proper use. For instance, the skills section can be two to three columns, with three to five bullets in each one. The certification section in this resume sample is too small; to constitute a section it should have at least three bullets. In this case, the certification can still be highlighted by including it in the education section and changing its name to Education & Certifications. Alternatively, if a certification was earned as a part of on-the-job training, it could be added in the experience section at the bottom of the description for the particular job, and denoted with a special bullet or asterisk.
Keep Sections Uniformed
Different section should have one solid format that is followed throughout. This makes the sections look organized and helps to make it easy to identify and to locate key pieces of information. Even if the information varies in some regards, find a way to make your presentation uniformed.
