A hiring manager learns about you from your resume; if you have a poorly written one that is awkwardly formatted, you will not get the chance you deserve to interview for a position for which you may be the best qualified. We have asked experts to critique this Office Manager and Purchaser resume sample and point out common errors and problems. Have a look before you send out your next resume and put yourself ahead of the competition.
Format is Crucial
You should keep a consistent format throughout your resume to maintain a flow that makes your document easy and quick to read. This resume sample has a large gap between the first block of experience and the remainder; this not only looks bad, but a reviewer potentially will not even see the bottom portion of the resume at all. Keep your spacing to a minimum, just enough to separate your information into sections; this sample has too much space between each block of text. Also, be sure that the format you use for each work experience paragraph is consistently the same, so that a reviewer can anticipate where the pertinent information will be.
Accomplishments Are Placed at The Top
Your accomplishments are the most significant events of your career. If you have a standalone accomplishments list, then it should be placed just below your summary at the very top of the resume. Placing it below the highlights diminishes the impact and makes it appear that your accomplishments are merely a subsection of your highlights.
Experience Length Is Similar For Each Position
Of course some of your work experience will be more complex than other jobs you have had, but avoid a lengthy list of bullets for one position and extremely sparse information for the next. This makes the resume look uneven but it also implies that you were unhappy or unengaged in some of your jobs. Even the simplest of positions involves a number of small tasks you can list. This resume sample also tries to cram more than ten years of experience into one section which makes the overall work performance hard to judge. Wrong: Office Manager/Purchaser, 04/1998 ?
