Your resume needs to be fully realized in order to have a hope at getting a job interview, so you need to follow certain guidelines to make sure your resume is of the highest quality. The next time you have to write a resume, remember these general rules you need to follow.
Summary should include skills, talents and experiences
Take a look at the summary given for this sample resume: Graduated from York County School of Technology with LPN, Current CPR certification, Current Nurse Aide, Preparing to take NCLEX-LPN on August 2, 2013. Currently have Temporary Practice Permit. Graduating from the York County School of Technology and being certified in CPR is great, but those are all pieces of information that can and should be learned from other parts of the resume. You want your resume summary to provide a concise overview of what experiences you bring to the table. It should include soft skills and personality traits that are desirable in this line of work, so that is the kind of material you should focus on.
Licenses should go at the bottom or be combined with education
Immediately after this resume sample’s summary is a section devoted to licenses, and this is information that should really be reserved for the bottom of the resume. You want to immediately grab a prospective employer’s attention as soon as he or she grabs your resume, and starting off with your licenses is not going to be too impressive. Plenty of people are CPR certified, and although it is a useful skill that should definitely be put on a resume, you want to start with material that is more unique to you. In a situation like this where there is only one certification listed, it would even be preferable to simply combine it with the rest of your education.
Skills should be evenly distributed between two columns
It is a very good idea to split your skills section into two columns, so you can include numerous skills without taking up a bunch of space on your resume. However, if you are going to have two columns, you want to be as even as possible. This sample resume has five skills in the first column and only one in the other, so you would want to redistribute the points like this:
Use bullet points for work experience instead of paragraphs
As you are discussing your previous work experience, you want to make sure you are formatting your responsibilities and accomplishments using bullet points as opposed to having everything in one paragraph. This will make the material much easier to read. Using the information given for her time at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehab, we would rewrite it to be like this:
