It is a good idea to read through a sample resume that is similar to the type of resume you will be sending off to various companies. Therefore, it stands to reason that if your only real work experience is as an intern, then you would want to go through a nonprofit marketing intern resume sample to get ideas. Our experts already read one of these samples, and they have a few things to say about it.
Never say that you are looking for a position within your summary
The summary that starts off your resume should be a general description of the talents and experiences you have to offer this prospective employer. This sample resume has a summary that does not really do that, and instead, it goes like this: Seeking a full time position within a diverse environment, that offers a greater challenge to increase my personal career growth while helping the company advance efficiently and productively. This person is only talking about she wants out of the company and what she has to gain. The focus of the summary should be on what the company has to gain from hiring you.
Add bullet points for your Work History
You should make sure every section of your resume is formatted correctly, and for the section titled Work History or Experience, everything should be presented as a bulleted list. This sample resume gives each individual point its own line, but you would want to add bullet points to make it clear when one point ends and another begins. It is very easy to simply add those bullets, so everything looks just a little bit nicer.
Do not begin points under Work History with verbs that end with -ing
There is a very specific way that you want to begin every bullet point under Work History. If you are talking about a job you currently work at, then you would want every bullet point to begin with a verb written in the present tense. Conversely, if you are describing a position you worked at in the past, then you would want your bullet points to start with past tense verbs. Since this person has stated that she has already quit her job at Susan G. Komen San Antonio Affiliate, we should rewrite the points, so they go like this:
Most current jobs should come before jobs you have already quit
On this sample resume, she states that she currently works at Medcare Associates, yet it comes after her job at Susan G. Komen San Antonio Affiliate, which states she stopped working there in 2012. You always want whatever information is most recent and relevant to come before information that is a little more dated. Therefore, we should switch those two positions around, so her Work History section starts with the job she presently works at.
Do not have a header for a section with no information
This resume sample ends with a header of Additional Information. First, there is no need to include a section titled Additional Information because it is simply too vague. Additionally, nothing is given underneath that header, so it is there for no reason. Make sure everything on your resume has a purpose and works toward you getting that new job.
