If you are in the process of applying for a new job, you want to make sure you make the strongest first impression possible. Be sure to take note of these areas to ensure that you do not make the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
The summary is a great place to showcase your unique skillsets and offer an overview that will be an introduction to the rest of your application. The best summaries use unique phrases that stand out just enough to hook your reader’s attention. In this sample resume, the applicant has begun with a solid introduction; however, this summary could be improved if it were lengthened. Keep in mind that summaries can be up to 6 lines and are best written in short, concise fragments.
Always use bullets for listing items
The formatting of your resume is one of its most crucial aspects. Resumes that are exceptionally organized, proofread, and have made clear points are undoubtedly the most memorable. In order to maximize the format of your resume, be sure to always use bullet points. It may seem like a minor adjustment, but doing so can emphasize each separate point you are making. Doing so is especially crucial for the previous experience section. Notice the difference in these two formats: WRONG: Sales / Customer Services Supervisor01/2010 to 03/2012 Alpine Auto TransportersWest Jordan, UT Provided expert advice on the automotive transportation industry. Notice how the simple change of adding bullets immediately improves the readability of the applicant’s content.
Avoid using color on resume
This may seem like another minor rule, but avoid using color on your resume. While you want your application to stand apart as unique, using color or other formatting is not the best way to do so. Chances are, your employer will not be so strict as to reject a resume that has used color, but it is always better the err on the side of caution.
