The Summary Is an Elevator Pitch
By definition, an elevator pitch lasts about 30 seconds. In that amount of time, you need to convince your audience to invest in you as a professional. Think of your summary as equivalent to this short pitch. You want to immediately put your best foot forward without taking up too much space. Here the summary is 7 lines long when the recommended length is 4-6 lines. Remember, you have your entire resume to extrapolate on the details of your professional merits. For the summary, capture the main skills and qualities that make you valuable to your potential employer. A revised and shorter summary will look like this: Multifaceted and highly dependable Network Technician and Administration professional with advanced hardware and software troubleshooting skills seeking to utilize valuable skill sets in various roles providing computer operations and support for small businesses. Almost 30 years of hands-on experience in computer hardware, software and other peripherals with updated knowledge in current technologies. Enthusiastic and excellent communicator with recognized ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals at any levels. What will you do with all that extra space? Put it in your experience section. Many resume writers have trouble capturing the full scope of their employment history due to special constraints.
Define Your Accomplishments
With the accomplishments section, you want to take the opportunity to state information that is important, but doesn’t quite belong anywhere else. For example, if you’ve received an award for being a top network technician, you should make note of it in the accomplishments section. However, you don’t want to restate information or make vague comments. Wherever possible, use definitive statements or data like an increased rate of efficiency for a program you developed. Revised Accomplishments list:
The Accomplishments section isn’t appropriate for everyone. As a general rule, list at least three major achievements in this section. Otherwise, skip this section and incorporate any awards into your professional experience section. If you include this section, consistently use periods to end your phrases.
Make Everything Easy to Read
At a glance, your hiring manager should be able to locate your past job titles, years of employment and employer names within your professional experience section. This sample’s Experience section is a little confusing because there are no bullet pointes and it is difficult to differentiate between the company name and job title. A clearer format might look like: Network Technician / Assistant Network Administrator Lynchburg, VA Automated Conveyor Systems June 2009 to Current
