Writing an excellent resume that authentically showcases your unique skills and qualifications is the best way to make a strong first impression on your employer. To help you out, we have reviewed a Nanny sample resume and highlighted areas that need improvement or rewriting. Pay close attention to these areas and avoid making the same common mistakes on your own resume.
The summary is your opportunity to make a brief sales pitch about your professional experience. Doing so can set you apart from other applicants, so be sure to take advantage of this section’s potential. The strongest summaries are written in fragments and are between 4 and 6 lines. In this resume sample, the applicant has only written 2 lines. She has also italicized the font and has capitalized the word motivated. The best ways to stand out are not achieved through deviating from traditional format but rather from using vibrant language.
Always use bullets for listing items
The formatting of your resume should be as organized as possible. Doing so ensures that each item you have listed is memorable and presented in a clear fashion. Chances are, your employer has several other applications to read through and shouldn’t have to take extra time to navigate through text. Notice the difference in the following formats: WRONG: September 2002 to September 2006 Andreychuck Household Tampa, FL Family Assistant Supervised children while parents were on vacation, business trips and weekend getaways.Affectionately cared for 3 children, ages 9 months to 10 for 5 years. I taught the children safe behavior such as seeking adult assistance when crossing the street and avoiding contact with unsafe objects. I not only cared for their children but I also made certain their meals were prepared and the house was always in order. RIGHT: September 2002 to September 2006 Andreychuck Household Tampa, FL Family Assistant
Adding bullet points to separate each responsibility great improves the readability of the text.
Avoid using full sentences
In the above example, the applicant has written out her previous responsibilities in full sentences. As noted before, using pronouns is not necessary and therefore it is best to write in clear, descriptive phrases. Because your resume is short in nature, you will want to make sure that each word offers insightful information about your previous responsibilities. The applicant in this nanny resume sample has included insightful information, and editing the sentences into phrases can further strengthen the quality of writing.
Eliminate unnecessary sections
Having sections in your resume allows the writing to flow in a way that is logical and organized. In this resume sample the applicant has created the section entitled Professional Value Offered, where she lists the sort of families she has previously worked for. This information could be more appropriate for the summary section. It is important not to make your own sections and rather find away to include information into a section that is more standard to the resume.
