Are you looking for a new job or planning a career change? A good resume often makes the difference between frustration and success. This real-life example of a mortgage loan officer resume can help you revise your own resume to show your work history in the best light.
Use the space available to you
When you look at this sample resume, one thing immediately jumps out: the amount of white space on the page. White space can be a good thing in design, but leaving more than half the page blank is an undesirable visual effect. Even a novice worker can use a whole 8.5 x 11 page for his or her resume. Make the most of it. This person has been an active mortgage loan officer since 1999, so there is plenty of room for elaboration. How can you make the most of the space available to you? Start with a less crowded layout. This resume is in an unnecessarily small typeface, with many bullets crowded into a small space. Dont be afraid to give more room to your accomplishments. You can expand on bullet points or even add extra points as needed. Remember that many readers will be scanning your resume in haste, so choose an easily readable, user-friendly typeface to bring out your accomplishments.
Use bullet points rather than plain lists
The Professional Experience section is full of lists, but there are no bullet points: 02/2006 – Current DHI Mortgage Company ? Henderson , Nevada Loan Officer Originate, disclose, submit and lock mortgage loans for clients buying homes through D.R. Horton as well as other referral purchase and refinance loans in Nevada. Maintain and manage a pipeline of over 40 loans. 02/2005 – 02/2006 Oak Hill Mortgage ? Las Vegas, Nevada Loan Officer Learned how to complete a loan from application to closing. Built realtor relationships for future business. Proficient in lender guidelines, ratesheets, and origination systems. 06/1999 – 12/2004 Morgan Stanley ? Beverly Hills, California Registered Sales Assistant Managed projects and served as primary liaison between client and multiple internal groups to ensure clarity of goals and quality and adherence to deadlines. Complied with federal, state and company policies, procedures and regulations. For each of these three jobs, the writer should create bullet lists detailing the tasks and skills developed during those years in the workplace. Some of the skills listed here can be broken up into multiple bullet points, making them easier for prospective employers to scan and digest.
Keep your verb forms and tenses consistent
As soon as you start putting your accomplishments in a neat and tidy bullet format, youll start seeing any inconsistencies that might have crept in. This resume goes through a number of contradictory past and present verb forms while describing the mortgage loan officers experience:
Many cases like this can be traced back to cutting and pasting from an older resume. Revising your resume is a great opportunity to make sure that everything is consistent. Dont leave behind traces of an older format. Choose one format and stick with it for maximum professional impact.
Be careful about spacing
Remember that you need a space after every comma: Achieved President’s Club award in 2006,2007,2008,2011 and 2012 Go through your lists of years and achievements, making sure that all the spacing is correct. The find and replace feature in your word processor can help you sort out your spacing. Incorrect punctuation gives your resume an unprofessional look. A resume upgrade can give you an advantage in todays complicated job market. Consider using QuintCareer’s Resume Builder to help present your own accomplishments in the best way possible.
