If you are looking for a new position, a great resume is crucial to getting interviews. An outstanding resume can significantly increase your chances of being noticed by hiring managers and of actually getting hired. Our resume specialists have taken a look at a mill machinist resume sample and highlighted some common areas where many job applicants fall short, with some helpful suggestions for improvement. Review these points to make sure that your resume shows your qualifications to their best advantage.
Make a good impression with your summary
Let your summary present you to your best advantage by concisely highlighting your most important qualifications. These can include essential skills, outstanding achievements, and other information that emphasizes your suitability as a job candidate. Make sure that you use strong terms to describe your accomplishments. The summary should be far more than a brief statement of your past experiences. WRONG: Machinist with experience reviewing work orders and running several different machines using fanuc and mazatrol controls. I have experience in assembly, and in a warehouse environment. RIGHT: Experienced machinist proficient in running a variety of mill machines using Fanuc and Mazatrol controls. Additional skills include reviewing work orders, assembly, in-house inventory and forklift operation.
Use bullet points throughout your resume
For a consistent and visually pleasing look, use bullet points in all sections of your resume. Highlighting individual points with bullets also adds clarity and makes your resume easier to read. Draw the attention of busy hiring managers who are likely to skim over a paragraph with eye-catching points that succintly present your credentials and achievements. WRONG: I have experience in running Cincinnati mills and laths, Hass cnc mills and Mazak cnc mills and was learning how to run a 5 axis cnc Mazak. Most of my experience in set ups is on cnc mills. I have experience in assembly in tearing down, sub building and final build and testing of the the units built using the process provided. In the warehouse I was doing in-house inventory by doing cycle counts on all the parts in the building and picking parts that were ordered by departments and providing the right amount parts using scales and driving a stacker lift truck and forklift. RIGHT:
Unlike a uniform paragraph, a bulleted list presents the potential employer with a clear picture of your experience, skills and abilities.
Omit unnecessary information from education section
The applicant submitting the sample resume has correctly used the Education section to include his college degree, the year it was earned and the school that conferred it. However, the additional information he proceeded to list would have been more appropriate in a Skills or Highlights section.
Pay attention to format
Formatting your resume properly can go a long way to attracting employers’ attention and can make the difference between getting called for an interview or being overlooked. One issue presented by this sample resume is the lack of spacing between sections. This defect, in addition to the lack of bullet points in the Experience and Education sections, makes the resume appear squeezed-together and far shorter than it actually is. A casual look at this page would lead a manager to assume that the candidate has little experience and few achievements and skills, which is not the case here.
