Before you get to work on preparing for a job interview, you need to have a stellar resume that makes a hiring manager actively want to meet you. There are various tricks and tips to become familiar with, but a good start is to listen to the advice of our experts, who have gone through a metal machinist resume sample. There are several mistakes within this sample, and there is quite a bit to be learned from it.
Summary needs to be a paragraph
Consider your resumes summary to be a quick introduction to who you are as an individual. Within a few lines, you want to go over some of the basic skills you have that make you qualified for whatever position you are hoping to gain. This sample only has one sentence to start off the resume, and that is not enough information to make an employer interested to read the rest. You need to intrigue and capture the attention of whoever is reading your paper, so consider your skillset carefully to see what else you can add.
Be careful of the caps lock
You want your resume to catch someones eye, but you want to prevent it coming across as though you are yelling at the reader. Therefore, you need to use the caps lock sparingly. All of the information given in this samples Skills and Accomplishments section are in all caps, and honestly, it gets annoying. Capitalizing the businesses you have worked for or where you went to school is one thing, but you should not have entire sentences written with all capital letters.
Write using correct tenses
This sample resume only has one position listed under Experience, and it says that he currently works there. However, the material given for that job is written in the past tense. This is incorrect, and it is one of those mistakes that will make an employer question whether you have a keen eye for detail. Taking the sentence given, we would want to rewrite it properly as such:
Minimum of five points should be given per job
This person has only worked at one job since 1991, yet only one point is given to describe his experience working there. There must be more he did in over 20 years of working at the same company. If you are unable to adequately explain what you did at every job you have worked at, then it is going to make a hiring manager wary of what you can and cannot do. The general recommendation you should always abide by is to have around five to eight bullet points for every place of work. Many additional points need to be added in order to make this sample really stand out.
Accomplishments should come after skills
This resume sample ends with a section devoted to the applicants accomplishments, which can be incredibly useful if you have achieved something significant in your career. However, it needs to come sooner on the page. Standard rules dictate that an Accomplishments section should come between the parts dedicated to your skills and work experiences. It is optional to include a section like this, but since this sample has chosen to add one, it needs to be moved up. You never know who you will be going up against for an open position, so you need to be certain your resume is perfect and free of errors.
