Crafting a really well-formatted resume that can get you the job you want is not as tricky as it might seem at first. There are some practices when writing a resume that will really help it to stand out. Our experts have reviewed this Mental Health Counselor Intern resume sample with just these practices in mind, and pointed out where changes should be made to take it to the next level. Use these notes when writing your own resume.
A summary section should be 4-6 lines and should address an overview of your experience, two or three major skill sets, and some valuable personality traits/soft skills
When writing a summary, while it is okay to use sentence fragments and to be brief, you also don’t want to undersell yourself. This section should mention your breadth of experience and highlight the skills and qualifications you want to stand out. The summary in the sample resume can be expanded: WRONG: Degree in Mental Health Counseling with experience working with children ages 4 to 17. Have knowledge to facilitate parenting group with Systematic Training for Effective Parenting program. RIGHT: Highly committed Mental Health Counselor demonstrating excellence through previous internship. Recently received degree in Mental Health Counseling. Experience working with children ages 4 to 17. Have knowledge to facilitate parenting group with Systematic Training for Effective Parenting program. Competent with patient diagnosis. Seeking a position to apply skills in counseling setting.
Separate your information into appropriate categories
It is good to have a Highlights section before you actual job experience to highlight some of the skills and traits you have to offer. The Highlights section in the sample resume mixes some specific training with personality traits. Separating these different kinds of information into their own categories will help to emphasize each specific point, while providing better flow and organization. Try to have at least 3 bullets per section, with no more than 5-8 per column in two columns. WRONG: Highlights
Make sure an Accomplishments section has a minimum of 3 bullet points; otherwise, include these with the experience section
While it is generally good practice to mention some accomplishments before your job experience, this should only be done if you have at least 3 bullet points per section. Any less and the section is too small, and small sections can make you seem less qualified. If you don’t have that much to talk about in this section, just include your one or two points in the Experience section.
All lists should be in bullet point format
Bullet point format will be easier to read and appear more professional and organized. Make sure not to include periods at the end of you points unless they are in the Experience section. In the following example, the Accomplishments section in the sample resume was merged with the Experience section and some formatting changes were made. You will also notice one spelling correction. EXAMPLE: Experience May 2012 to February 2013 Positive Influences Fort Worth , TX Student Intern Counselor.
