The Skills Section Should Showcase Your Best Abilities
In this resume sample, the skills section looks like this: SKILLS Patient care: Skilled in essential physical job functions – operating ultrasound equipment and competently performing ultrasound procedures. Team lead/Trainer: Experienced in leading teams, delegating work, enforcing policies, and ensuring assigned tasks are completed. motivate co-workers. The main issue here is it is too wordy. Skills should be presented in two columns using bullet points. Each point should be a quick two or three words summing up a skill or area of expertise. You dont want to explain each skill as is done in this sample. The hiring manager should be able to quickly scan your skills and know what your abilities and strengths are. You want to highlight the things that make you the perfect employee for the job, so make sure they are all relevant to the position. Think of this like presenting the keywords that represent what you are good at doing.
Make Sure Formatting Is Consistent
Here is the experience section of this resume: EMERY MEDICAL SOLUTIONS Apopka, FL Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Externship 12/2010 to 01/2011 Completed diagnostic-quality ultrasound exams under the direction of the radiologist.Sterilized medical equipment after each procedure.Recorded patient histories and filed supporting clinical data and diagnosis. NEURO SKELETAL IMAGING Apopka, FL Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Externship 09/2010 to 11/2010 *Selected equipment for use in ultrasound setup according to specifications of examination *Positioned patients for optimal comfort before procedures *Operated ultrasound equipment to produce images of internal organs The applicant has used two different formats to present the duties for each entry. One uses a paragraph form and the other uses a list. This is confusing and doesnt provide the professional look that a resume should have. For the experience section, the duties should be in a list form, like the second entry above. However, you should strive to have at least five points listed. The points dont have to be limited to duties. You can also include accomplishments and contributions. Finally, dont use punctuation of any kind at the end of your bullet points.
Include All Work Experience In The Experience Section
There shouldnt be a separate work history section like there is in this resume. Having job history information in two sections will only confuse hiring mangers. This information should be under the experience section. The experience section should list your past work history and include all of your past positions – paid or unpaid. Jobs should be included even if they are not in the same industry as the position for which you are applying. You dont want to leave any gaps in your work history.
