Applying for a new job can be an exciting and also overwhelming process. The prospect of advancing in a career provides incredible motivation, but sometimes people find that resume writing is a daunting task and they don’t have a proper guide. In order to help you with this, we have reviewed a sample Mechanical Engineering New Grad resume sample and highlighted problems and sections that could be rewritten. If you take notice of these things, you won’t worry about making the same mistake on your own resume. Use these guidelines to help you create the strongest resume possible.
The Highlights section needs at least 3 or 4 items
The purpose of the Highlights section is for the applicant to pack in phrases and key words that are relevant to the job field. The section should always be relevant, and table formatting is best. In this sample Mechanical Engineering New Grad resume, the applicant has only listed one item. It is better to leave out the Highlights section completely rather than to write it something than to only have one item, especially when this particular skill could be relevant in another section.
Avoid including a manager’s name or contact information
Although references are typically an important part of the application process, it is not necessary to list them on your resume. If an employer needs references from you, he or she will ask for that information specifically somewhere in the application or even in an interview. Leaving the name and number appears informal.
Use bullets to help separate items in a list
Formatting is a key component of your resume. This means that the employer should be able to read over your document quickly while also remembering all of the important information about you. If many things are listed together, taking up multiple lines of texts, chances are that the reader will skip over them in an effort to save time. Notice the difference in readability between these two formats: WRONG: Experience 01/2005 ECOMES SARLWelder Intern
RIGHT: Experience 01/2005 ECOMES SARLWelder Intern
A simple change and formatting can drastically improve the appearance of your resume.
Don’t overload the information
The applicant has listed a lot of items in the experiences section and although adding bullets helps organizationally, it is evident that there is too much listed here. Employers only have a certain amount of time to devote to reading resumes and thus you should remember that less is more. Part of the applicant’s experience reads: I conducted corrosion, spallation and oxidation testing of several gas turbine components I characterized combusted syngas contaminants at the entrained-flow and fluidized-bed gasifier exhausts I performed SEM & EDS X-ray analysis of gas turbine hot ash depositions for trace metals detection [ ] This method of including information is problematic not only because of the information overload, but also because it reads as a run-on sentence. Attention to grammar and syntax is as important to your resume as what is listed on it. Be sure to proofread your document for overly-worded descriptions.
