Applying for a new job means preparing a strong resume that will represent you well. Resumes are a great way to showcase your skills and qualifications and are especially important considering they are your future employers first impression of you. In order to help you with this important process, we have looked at a McDonald’s Service Worker resume sample and have outlined sections that could use improvement and correction. Be sure to take note of these edits, as they can prevent you from making the same common mistakes on your own resume.
Pay close attention to grammar and punctuation
The way your resume is written is as important as the information on it. Therefore, you want to be sure that grammar and punctuation is meticulous. If an employer detects that you have not taken time to proofread your work, he or she may assume that you are not truly committed. In the summary section, the applicant has used punctuation incorrectly.
Always use bullet points when listing items
Along with proofreading your work, maintaining consistent format is crucial. Bullets should be used whenever information is listed. Doing so keeps your writing organized and presents it in a manner that can be read easily and quickly. An employer may not have time to read through large blocks of text, so be sure yours is as easy to read as possible. Notice the difference in the following formats: WRONG: Experience Service Worker July 2012 to February 2013Mcdonalds ? Hastings, MN Responsible for promoting safe and clean working environment.Unloaded incoming inventory and placed products into freezer.Had to work with customers over a 8 hour work day. Helper October 2011 to March 2011Food Shelf ? Prescott, WI I volunteered at the food shelf stocking shelves and taking inventory. RIGHT: Experience Service Worker July 2012 to February 2013 Mcdonalds — Hastings, MN
Helper October 2011 to March 2011 Food Shelf — Prescott, WI
Simple changes in formatting can make a significant difference in the strength of your resume.
Avoid generic words
Notice in the above section how some of the job descriptions were rephrased. Because resumes are brief in nature, you want to make sure that each word packs a strong punch. Therefore, it is best to avoid common phrases such as had to work with. As you can see, this phrase can be replaced with interacted to consolidate and strengthen the description.
Keep accomplishments relevant
The accomplishments section is a wonderful place to list any recognitions or awards, especially if they pertain to the desired job field. While the applicant has listed a variety of hobbies here, they are not needed on the resume. These interests should be saved for an in-person interview after appropriate questioning. The accomplishments should also be listed in a brief, concise format and should be as specific as possible. Writing your resume can be an intimidating process, but there is help available to you if you are interested in consulting the experts.
