Your resume can really make or break your job prospects, so tip the odds in your favor by learning how to write an ideal resume. One way to do that is to read other peoples resumes in your field, so if you want to be a material handler, then you should read a material handler resume sample to get ideas. Our experts have already gone through one of these resumes, and they have some valuable points to make about it.
Four to six lines is suggested length for resume summaries
The purpose of including a summary at the very beginning of your resume is to give the hiring manager a good sense of what to expect from the rest of it. In some circumstances, an employer will decide whether to read the rest of your resume based on the summary. Therefore, it is a good idea to include a good amount of information to give the most thorough overview of who you are as an employee. This sample resume only has one sentence for the summary, but there should be at least four. A solid paragraph is what you should aim for.
Most recent work experience needs to come first
Once we get down into this sample resumes experience section, we see that a job she quit in 2007 is listed before the job she currently works at. This is absolutely not the way to format a resume. You always want to start with whatever job is the most recent and work backwards chronologically. Her current job should be listed first, and then she can talk about the job she quit years ago.
Format experience section using bullet points
The information given for her time working as a material handler at TSM Corp is presented as a paragraph. To make this material easier to go through for the hiring manager, you would want to reformat significantly. This means making every sentence its own separate bullet point on a different line. Therefore, we would want to change that particular portion to look like this:
Every point under experience should begin with an actively strong verb
The last thing you want to do is to make a hiring manager bored while reading your resume. A good way to instantly make someone more interested in what you have to say is to start every bullet point within the experience section with a good verb. The above mentioned list does not really do that, so we could rewrite it like this:
High school education can usually be taken out
This sample resume states that she graduated from high school in 2002. Unless you are still a student, there is no real need to keep putting this information on your resume. An employer is going to be more impressed with your real world experience than the fact that you have a diploma. In this scenario, it would be preferable to remove it altogether. Applying to new jobs can be a stressful time, but it can also be very exciting. Alleviate some of the pressure by making sure your resume is formatted correctly by using QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
