If you need to submit a resume to a new job opportunity, then you want to be absolutely certain it is perfect. A few small errors can really add up and jeopardize your chances of getting the job before an employer has even met you. Summary should be no more than six lines long
You want your resume to start off with a summary that draws the reader in and makes him or her excited to see what else you have to say. However, you do not want to go overboard and include a surplus of information like this sample resume does. This summary is way too long, and it needs to be condensed significantly. Summaries should only be around four to six lines in length, and a lot of this information could probably be moved into the skills or experience sections.
Make sure you have a skills section
One of the most important sections you can include within your resume is dedicated to your skills. This is a great opportunity to include keywords the employer is going to be looking for. For example, if the job listing contained skills and attributes the company is looking for in an employee, then you can use the skills section to include some of those words. You never want to lie about possessing a skill you do not actually have, but there should at least be a few you can mention. This resume sample does not have a section like this at all, so she would want to add one.
Accomplishments section should come after skills
The very bottom of this sample resume contains a section devoted to her achievements. Although it is entirely optional, it can be a good idea to include a section like this in order to highlight all you have accomplished throughout your professional career. However, it is important to keep in mind that there should be a minimum of three points if you are going to put them in their own portion. You want to be certain that every section is justified in being there, and this sample only has one point under that header. She would want to come up with a couple more achievements or just put that one accomplishment in with work history.
Every point under work history should be about you
Once you get into your work experience, you want to talk about what your various responsibilities were at every job and what you achieved at each job. If we look at the points given for her time working at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, MD, we will see the following bullet point:
It is great that the organization does that, but it tells us nothing of what she did there. You want the focus to be on what you did, so she would want to talk about how she specifically was involved with the Womens Fund of El Paso.
Every job should have at least five bullet points
You want the overview for each job to be as detailed as it can be. That generally means having a minimum of five points for each job. There are many jobs on this resume sample with only two or three points, and there are some positions with nothing at all.
