Know Proper Sentence Structure
One common mistake that people make when it comes to writing resumes is not having proper sentence structure. First person pronouns have no place in a resume. Resumes need to be full of short and sweet sentences that get right to the point. They don’t always have to be complete sentences either. Your resume will basically go against everything you learned in college about writing academic papers. Most of your sentences should being with an action verb, another thing that you have always learned not to do. Here are some examples from the sample resume, and how they should be properly structured. Wrong Summary My name is Maricruz Lopez and I have experience working costumers and finance. For the past four years I have been a part of AFJROTC TX934 and for the past Year I have worked for a local construction company. Accomplishments Though out my High School career, I have been a member of multiple national organizations such as AFJROTC, LULAC, FNHS and KHAS. In LULAC I was the SOA (an officer) and for ROTC I was in charge of different positions. Right Summary Hardworking, bilingual secretary with 3 years of experience. Has experience with customer relations, finance, and basic business concepts. Accomplishments Proud member of multiple national organizations:
As you can see, the sentences are not only changed to remove the first person pronoun, they are organized with bullet points when there are multiple items listed, which is the next point of topic.
Use Bullet Points
Bullet points should be used under every section except for the professional summary. The highlights section has bullet points, but nothing else does. Adding bullets makes the information much more organized. Your potential employers will be able to skim your resume and look for specific information. Here is another example for how bullet points should be used. Wrong Experience 05/2012 E.S.Gomez, Inc. ? Austin , TX Main Secretary As secretary I am in charge of main phone lines and am the first line of contact to all costumers and field employees. I am generally the first person informed if there are any issues, be it scheduling or in the road from our divers. In emergencies I am also authorized to make or close out invoices. Right Experience 05/2012 E.S.Gomez, Inc. ? Austin , TX Main Secretary
The bullet points eliminated a lot of unnecessary words and makes the resume much easier to read.
Clarity is Everything
You need your information to be clear. You can turn something that doesn’t seem important and make it a selling point of your resume. For example, under experience, the sample resume says Not specified for the second job listing. Even if you didn’t have a specific title or you worked for someone who didn’t have an exact business name, you need to give it a name and title. This can be changed to: Maria’s Housecleaning – Austin, TX Assistant/Translator
The original wording of the job in the sample resume makes it look like a child tagged along with mom, but this shows that you can speak more than one language and did something important for the company. This sample resume is a great start. It just needs some restructuring to make it stand out above the rest. Use the sample and these critiques to make your own amazing main secretary resume.
