Summary should be a solid paragraph in length
A lot of pressure is placed on your resume during the job application process, and a lot of that weight is given to your resume’s summary. This is the first thing a potential employer will read about you, and in some circumstances, it will make the employer decide if he or she wants to read the rest of your resume. Therefore, you want to make sure that your summary provides enough information, so it makes a hiring manager intrigued and interested to see what else you have to offer. One or two more sentences would need to be added to this sample summary so that an ample amount of information is given.
Skills should come right after summary
Including a skills section on your resume is an excellent opportunity to include valuable keywords and talents an employer is looking for in a potential candidate. However, this section should be placed more toward the top between the summary and work history. This resume sample has it toward the bottom, and that is the wrong place. All of the points in the section are perfectly good and are desirable in this particular field. It just needs to come a little sooner.
Current jobs should be talked about in the present tense
Proper grammar is crucial on a resume, and although you do not have an essay to write, you should make sure each statement is correctly formatted. That means using the present tense for jobs you presently work at. It would also mean using the past tense for jobs you have already quit. On this sample resume, we see that she currently works at Riverside Medical Center, but all of the points are written in the past tense. To correct this, we would want to change the bullet points, so they look like this:
Be prepared to talk about gaps in employment
There is a gap in employment on this sample resume from July 1993 to June 1995. That is two years where we are unsure what she was doing, and an employer is going to want to know what you were up to. Having gaps is not necessarily a bad thing because there may be a perfectly reasonable explanation for why you were not working. As long as you can explain why the gap exists, there is no reason to be concerned. An employer will ask about the gap during the interview, and you just need to be ready to talk about it. Employers read through a ton of resumes, many of which contain errors and irrelevant information.
