LiveCareer is committed to helping you create a resume that will aid in your job search. This document may be the only thing employers read when considering you, so you need to quickly and effectively sell yourself. Take a look at this Kentucky LPN resume sample to see what common mistakes you can avoid when writing your resume.
Before even looking at the content of this resume, consider it as a whole. How does the organization of information make you feel? Before you even begin reading, it already looks disorganized and cluttered. There is no distinction between the different sections and there are large intimidating blocks of text. This is a resume that would be very difficult to read, which is not what you want employers thinking. Even if the content is strong, its organization makes it inaccessible. Always take a look over your resume once you finish writing and think about how it looks at a glance.
Writing your summary
Now note the summary at the beginning of this resume. This section is meant to be where you can provide an overview of your skills, experiences, and professional traits. It should be in the form of a paragraph and it should be about four lines long. The actual content of this summary is pretty strong, but there is not enough of it. Notice that it mentions how long the writer has been working, what they have done, and some aspects of their work ethic. A huge mistake the writer made, however, was repeating the second sentence. Always be on the lookout for silly typographical errors such as this one. With the second instance removed, this summary is just a single line, which is far too short.
When you highlight your skills, it should be two columns of three or four bullet points. This sample section has double the expected amount, which makes the section take up too much space on the page. Additionally, several of the points are repetitive. Successful treatment of wounds, Wound cleaning/care expertise, and Wound care specialist can all easily be combined into a single bullet point. With space being so limited, you cannot afford to waste this much space in a single section.
How to format experiences
Your work experience section is the most important part of your resume. This is what will tell employers what they need to know before deciding whether to hire you or not. Having the correct formatting is important for getting the attention of readers. It should be a list of positions you have held, with five to eight bullet points after each one. The paragraph format seen here is a very disorganized and ineffective method of communicating this information. It should look more like this: Charge NurseMay 2009 to Current Christian Care Center of KuttawaKuttawa, KY
Other changes made here include putting an action verb at the beginning of each point and shifting to present tense because it is the currently held position.
Finally, this resume is too short. You should always completely fill a single page without bleeding onto a second. The changes listed above will significantly lengthen the resume, but it also may be necessary to add an optional section, such as achievements, affiliations, or certifications.
