Summary should be one cohesive paragraph
Although there are sections of your resume that should be presented in list form, your summary is not one of them. Some good points are brought up within the sample resume’s summary, but instead of giving each individual sentence its own line, they should all come one after the other as a single paragraph. This is the format employers want to see, and it will also help with reducing the amount of space your summary takes up.
Your licenses should be given at the bottom of the resume
Directly after your summary should come a list of relevant skills that would be useful for the job you are trying to get. On this resume sample, a list of licenses she has obtained comes next, and this information should really come more toward the bottom of the page after she talks about her education. It is also generally acceptable to simply combine your licenses and certifications with your education section in order to conserve space. You want to put your best foot forward when you are submitting a resume, which means you want to get into your skillset and work experiences as soon as possible. Leave your licenses for the end.
It is fine to break up skills into two columns
This sample resume has some great skills within that section, and the only problem with it is that it is a little long for a single column. You generally want no more than eight points per column in the skills section. Fortunately, it is acceptable to have two columns to have a total of 16 points. This resume sample only has 12 points in this section, so the best thing to do would be to break it up into two columns with six points each like this:
Always include an end date for every place of work
Two places of employment are given on this sample resume. She has her current job, which she started working at in 2010, but another workplace is given that only has December 2002 listed. A lot of questions are raised by this, including if she worked there up until 2010 or if she quit some time ago. You never want a hiring manager to make guesses about your resume, so be as detailed and specific as you can. That means including both a start date and end date for every position you have held.
High school diplomas can generally be excluded
Stating that you have earned a high school diploma is great if it was in the last year or so, but in this sample resume’s case, she got hers in 2000. She went onto college and has plenty of work experience, so there is no need to keep including her high school education on her resume. It is only taking up space, so it would be preferable to leave it out entirely. Keep these tips in mind the next time you have to churn out a resume.
