When it’s time to create your resume for a new job search, the task can be daunting. A great way to avoid mistakes is to look over sample resumes, so we’ve asked our experts to examine this junior pharmacist with no experience sample resume. Check out what they had to say and apply it to your own.
Don’t include affiliations you are no longer apart of
Affiliations are great details to include in your resume, but only if you are currently apart of them. This resume writer includes a school affiliation, the Pre-Pharmacy Informational Learning and Leadership Society, that they haven’t belonged to since graduation. They would just need to delete this information.
Don’t include certain education entries
This resume lists two universities, only one of which is the school the applicant graduated from. If you switch schools, there is no need to put the institution you started at. This resume should only include Florida State University. The applicant also does not need to list coursework related to the degree they received or GPAs unless the graduation date is recent. WRONG: BACHELOR OF SCIENCE: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES2013 Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, Leon Minor in Chemistry 3.0 Overall GPA 3.0 Science GPA Member of FSU PILLS club (Pre-Pharmacy Informational Learning and Leadership Society) Coursework in Organic Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Microbiology with 7 different science labs RIGHT: BACHELOR OF SCIENCE: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2013 Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, Leon Minor in Chemistry
Use at least 3 bullet points for each job
Sometimes, it can be hard to come up with points for employment history, but it is always good to have at least 5 bullet points for each job. This resume only averages 1 entry per position, and those are not separated by bullet points. To fix this error, the writer would need to come up with at least 2 more details per job and put them in bullet point format. WRONG: INTERNSHIP Tallahassee, FL Pharmacist and Pharmacy Techs trainee and observer 07/2012 to 08/2012 WHITE SANDS BEACH SERVICES Destin, FL Beach service attendant 05/2012 to 08/2012 Long days 10 + hours greeting guests and setting up beach chairs and umbrellas. Highly physically demanding. RIGHT: INTERNSHIP Tallahassee, FL Pharmacist and Pharmacy Techs trainee and observer 07/2012 to 08/2012
WHITE SANDS BEACH SERVICES Destin, FL Beach service attendant 05/2012 to 08/2012
Make sure the Experience section doesn’t sound like a job description
When this applicant creates more bullet points about their specific experience, they need to make sure they don’t include details that sounds more like a job description. An example of this kind of error is the applicant’s mention of a position being highly physically demanding. Projects, initiatives, specific duties, and metrics are all good things to use as employment details.
Only put relevant volunteer experience
This resume lists volunteer work that isn’t relevant to pharmaceutical work. Volunteer jobs are great to list, but make sure to only list positions that gave you skills that you can bring with you to your future employment. This section should be taken out completely for this applicant.
Use larger font
Large font makes resumes easier to read and information easier to find. This resume uses 8.5-pt font, which is much too small to easily read. You should use at least 10-pt size to be easier on the eyes. It will help guarantee employers will continue reading about you as a potential asset.
Always proofread before submitting
No matter what you do to adjust your resume, it is important to proofread carefully before handing it off to a potential employer. Not doing so can give the impression of sloppiness. This resume has extra spaces, mistakenly capitalized words, and awkward sentence structure. A good proofread would catch all of these errors.
