When youre looking to start your career, using resume samples and getting advice from experts will help you with the job search. Were using an IT Student resume sample where resume experts have found some major mistakes to avoid.
The IT Student resume starts with a Professional Profile section, which works well as a summary statement. However, the next section below it should be the Skills section, and not labeled as Qualifications. The last sentence of the Professional Profile should be added to the Skills section as part of the list of skills you wish to showcase on your resume. Make sure to use other keywords and phrases for the target industry in this section, as well as soft skills. You should not have at least three to four items in each column but do not exceed eight items per column. Much of the items listed in the Relevant Experience section should be moved here, which emphasizes skills, either technical or non-technical.
The Business Administration Student resume has a Relevant Experience and a separate Experience section, which are unnecessary. Keep it simple at one section, listing each position in backward chronological order. You should include the location of the position and the dates of employment for each. The accomplishments listed in the Relevant Experience section could be used to describe the duties, responsibilities, and achievements for the position. In the case of this resume, there is a ten-year gap between the year of college graduation and the work experience listed. It appears that there is also a lack of information provided to support the summary assertion of management experience. The work experience should list the jobs that took place in those ten years, even though it appears that the resume belongs to a career-changer who thought he shouldnt list the job history because it seemed irrelevant to his current career goals. The mention of professional video recording and editing, as well as the web design and graphics, can include web links to his best work and/or a portfolio that showcases his wide range of skills.
The most recent school attended should be listed first, in reverse chronological order. The school, college, or university should be listed first, followed by the major and main course of study. You do not need to include your year of graduation but it would make sense to do so if you are a recent graduate. You may wish to include your grade point average (GPA) as well, if it is high, along with any Latin honors you may have received, such as summa cum laude, magna cum laude, etc. The IT education listed under Experience can be shifted to this section, and listed above the existing entry.
The IT Student resume has an Affiliations section, but the intent of that is to include any professional memberships and affiliations you may have. These are most helpful to you if you hold a board or a leadership position. However, in this example, only the church membership is mentioned. Anything that is considered political or religious should not be included on a resume. You are looking to get a job, not create controversy.
