You have worked hard to get where you are in your career; don’t sell yourself short with a resume that doesn’t promote your experience in the best possible way. This IT Specialist resume sample has been reviewed by experts to bring attention to common mistakes most resume writers make. If you want a hiring manager to notice you, follow these tips to write an outstanding professional resume.
Your Summary Is an Introduction and an Overview
Your summary is not a bullet list but rather a paragraph that gives a well-rounded introduction on who you are as a professional. This sample resume lists information that should be placed in the Highlights section. Additionally, since this resume shows experience in more than one career field, the summary should indicate the focus of this job-seeker. Wrong: Experienced in computer hardware/software maintenance and repair Experienced in information systems/technical applications and support Technical Support Representative skilled at resolving complex customer service issues in a timely manner. Ability to perform administration skills and duties Right: IT Specialist with 9 years of experience including troubleshooting hardware and software problems for customers from the Help Desk. Able to assist end users with use of general and technical applications. Maintain networks and backup data to ensure the security of information.
Education Should Be Relevant
Don’t mention your High School diploma if you have any secondary education. If you are currently attending college, state your anticipated graduation date so a prospective employer can gauge your progress in your education program. If you are already working in your career field, it should be obvious that your continuing education is intended to help you advance. In this resume sample, no major is listed but the student is enrolled in a Liberal Arts college which has no apparent connection to Information Technology; since this applicant is working in an IT field, this requires some explanation. If your education plan appears incongruent with your career path, mention in your summary section why you have chosen this education. Perhaps you are seeking extra management or business skills that are applicable to any field.
Additional Information Should Not Clutter the Resume
The Additional information section on this resume sample is unnecessary. These points could be included in the experience section or broken out into a skills section at the top of the document. If you do decide to have a Skills table on your resume, don’t list more than about 10 skills and keep them relevant to the position you are seeking. List your most important skills, not the ones you use most often. Some skills, like typing speed, may not be of high relevance to your job and should be left out to avoid cluttering the resume with information that won’t help you get an interview. Wrong: HIGHLIGHTS
