Incorporate these principles into your editing process to ensure you have a quality professional document.
Use the Professional Summary to the Fullest
Your professional summary is an opportunity to give a compelling overview of your professional merits. Phrases should be written in paragraph form and not include pronouns. Industry standards dictate a 4 to 6 phrase allotment for this section. In the sample, the applicant uses three phrases and the syntax for the last two doesn’t follow best practices. Think of each phrase as the end of the sentence I am a and you can’t go wrong. For example, a revised summary might look like this: Inside IT solutions specialist who utilizes complex software and service based solutions to help companies grow and thrive. Experienced inside IT sales specialist with highly developed customer relations and marketing skill sets. Knowledgeable professional with interest in outside sales, B2B and marketing oriented roles in the business workspace. Committed IT expert with proficiency in multiple industry systems and related technology.
Consider an Achievements Section
Not everyone needs an accomplishments section, but if you have at least three compelling and quantifiable achievements to list, the section can be an asset. In the sample, the applicant has several entries in the highlight section that are better suited for an accomplishments section. For example, the candidate can boast over 110 percent attainment vs. quota YTD. This type of entry is perfect for an accomplishment section and will free up space in the highlight section for more compelling details. This candidate’s highlight section might be: Accomplishments
Fill the Highlights Section
With some of the information moved to the accomplishments section, the highlights section will need a few extra bullets. Common practice states each column should have at least three bullets and no more than eight. Like in the sample, fill this area with your most marketable qualities as a professional. Highlights
Notice in this section, it is not necessary to punctuate phrases with periods and the phrases are fairly short in comparison to other sections.
Use Bullets in the Experience Section
In the sample, this applicant organized his experience entries in paragraph form. For a professional resume, there is no section that calls for complete sentence and outside of the summary section, details should be conveyed with bullet points. The professional experience section calls for 5 to 8 bullets per entry. Each point should be paired with a short phrase and end with a period. A revised first entry to this section might look like this: Inside Solution Sales Specialist September 2010 to Current Dell Inc.
