Keep your personal sections brief
To start every resume, you should have some personal information. This is the part of the resume that you can count on always being read. Unless you immediately capture an employers attention, they will likely not read the later information, which means you cannot sell yourself with it. Start with a personal summary, and follow it up with skill highlights. Both these sections are beautifully realized in this resume sample. Notably, despite being a common stumbling block, this summary is the perfect length and covers the appropriate areas. It is the achievements section where they trip up. Remember that an achievements or awards section is optional, so do not include it unless you have something especially impressive that you want to highlight. In this case, the achievements section is worthwhile, it is just too long. Containing nine bullets, it drives the entire resume to bleed into two pages. This section should still be included, but it should either be compressed or certain points should be removed.
Organize your work history
The biggest problem that this resume has is in its professional experience section. It is very disorganized, which makes it difficult to get a feel for the candidates qualifications at a glance. Strangely, the experiences do not seem to be in any particular order. You should always start with the most recent job, and list all of them in reverse order from there. The current position should be presented in present tense, while all others should be in past tense. Additionally, the paragraph format makes the section look cluttered and intimidating. A bulleted list is easier to format and read. Aim for about five points for each position, each starting with a strong action verb. When formatted correctly, one of these experiences would look like this: Owner and President 10/1997 to 08/2013 Weber Computer Consulting West Hartford, CT
As you can see, it is significantly easier for someone to read it and understand the information than in the original. Additionally, the final two bullet points are unnecessary. Keep the information organized and limited to the jobs presented.
Finally, make sure you always thoroughly proofread your resume. It is especially beneficial to receive advice from friends or even experts. This resume makes a couple simple mistakes that would be difficult to overlook if the writer looked over the document with a careful eye. The most significant typographical error is including the educational information two times. Mistakes like this present you in a poor light. If you are making simple mistakes when creating something for your own benefit, what kind of quality can they expect when you are working for them? Your resume will be instrumental in determining whether you receive a call for an interview.
