Summaries, Not Objectives
In this sample, you’ll notice an objective at the top under the summary title. A summary and an objective are not the same thing. While the objective was once the standard for resumes, that is no longer the case. Now, summaries are much preferred. The logic is the hiring manager already knows you are seeking a position with the company. Otherwise, you would not have applied. However, like the objective, the professional summary should contain strong action words and plenty of information about your professional merit. Forgo complete sentences in favor of short phrases written from the first person. Additionally, the accepted length for a professional summary is between 4 to 6 lines. Avoid use pronouns and details like names and dates. Focus on your overall abilities and experience as well as what makes you stand out from other candidates. For instance: Confident team player with years of experience in both big and local insurance companies and excellent customer service abilities. Capable and committed professional well versed in interviewing procedures and associated insurance technologies.
Keep Your Experience Format Consistent
Your resume is a very visual document, so all formatting must be uniform and consistent. In the experience section, the applicant has quality information for the most part, but fails to be consistent with bullet usage. Bullets are the standard in the resume, so the candidate is on the right track. Each bullet should pair with a short and powerful phrase that details past job responsibilities. The phrases need to make sense and convey a task of some sort. In the sample, the last entry simply contains words like consumer loans. It is not clear what the applicant did in relation to consumer loans, which leaves the phrase ineffective. A revised experience entry might look like: Producer/Agent03/2011 to Current
Education and Licenses Information
In the Highlights section, notice that the applicant puts licensing information as the first bullet on the left. As far as resumes are concerned, license information goes at the bottom of the document after the education section. If you are practicing in your field, the hiring manager can safely assume that you have the appropriate licenses and will be more concerned with your experience. Include license information at the bottom and allow more compelling professional merits to take precedence. For the original education section, it is unnecessary to include details about the high school diploma. In order to complete any high education coursework, you need a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Thus, this information is assumed and does not need to be explicitly stated. Conversely, if a high school diploma is the highest education you have, include it in the education section. In either case, don’t feel obligated to include graduation dates if your school years are far behind you. As such, this applicant can forgo dates if she chooses.
