To make sure you are following the best practices when writing your resume, you’ll want to compare it to other examples from the same field. An even better idea is to have a sample that has been revised and provided with notes on how to improve it, like our experts have done with this Insurance Agent Resume sample. Use these notes when writing your own resume and you’ll find yourself getting a call back in no time.
Separate your information into appropriate categories
It is good practice to have a Highlights section that describes some of your best qualifications. However, you want to avoid having too many bullets under one category. The sample resume mixes a lot of skills and certifications in the same section as some personal traits and soft skills. It would be better to organize things by having a separate Skills section. This will actually make the individual points stand out better, as well as making it easier for the person reading to refer back to different parts. WRONG: Skills
Keep all of the information relevant to the position being applied for
You will notice that the skills listed have nothing to do with being an insurance agent. These should only be included if they are going to be utilized in the job being applied for. It is possible that an unrelated skill could be described in a way that makes the applicant seem more qualified. Be aware of this as you build your own resume. Suppose that the applicant in the sample resume is applying for a sales associate position, as would appear to be the case in their summary. The appropriate experience section with irrelevant experience removed would look like this: WRONG: Work History World Financial Group 1265 Corona Pointe Corona, CA 92879 Insurance Agent 09/2008 to 03/2013
Acapulco Mexican Restaurant 9405 Monte Vista Ave, Montclair, CA Server Certified Hospitality Trainer 10/1989 to 03/2013
Century 21 Beachside ¬ 4197 Chino Hills Parkway, Chino Hills, CA Realtor 03/2005 to 12/2011
You will notice that the jobs with the oil company and as a machine operator were removed. The work at a restaurant demonstrates competence with sales and customer service, so it was kept in the augmented version.
Do not include high school/GED unless this is your only education
If you have some kind of college education, it is assumed that you have already completed basic secondary education. An education section may have college or further education, as well as licensure and certifications. Don’t be worried about how your resume will be received.
