Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or applying for your first job, following expert advice and reviewing resume samples will help you with your resume for your job search. We’re using a Human Resources Associate resume sample where resume experts have noted out some crucial mistakes to avoid.
Write a proper summary
The summary is your chance to pitch yourself to a prospective employer. Generally, this is written in paragraph form. Your summary should contain an overview of your experience, two or three of your strongest skills, and appropriate personality traits or soft skills that would make you a good candidate for consideration. For instance, a revised version might look like this: Summary Detail-oriented Human Resources Associate with strong analytical skills and 15 years of experience with benefits and payroll administration. Energetic, innovative, and creative, with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Seasoned and effective management professional with track record of building highly-motivated teams and providing excellent customer service. Seeking an HR position that would allow the opportunity to use HR knowledge, a sales background, and leadership experience to benefit the organization. Note that HR Associate was revised to Human Resources Associate. It is better to avoid abbreviations when using a term for the first time but perfectly fine to use them for subsequent uses.
Consistency in work experience formatting
The author of this resume does a good job in listing bullet points for the three oldest jobs but doesn’t do this for the current position, which is confusing and inconsistent. All experience listed should be formatted using bullet points and not written in paragraphs. Also, check for spelling, which is absolutely crucial. For example: WRONG Increase sales by conducting analysis with all levels of an organzation. Uncover critical business issues and processes that render a company innefficient. Develop presentations surrounding an organizations needs and demonstrate how ADP can launch their business into a thriving more productive company. Responsible for maintaining current product knowledge by attending and conducting ongoing trainings. Complete requests for proposals by our clients and prospects. RIGHT
Note that you should not begin bullets with responsible for or accountable for. Use a strong action word. [Include Highlights and Awards/Accomplishments] The author mentions his skills but needs to list any awards received for achievements made or include specifics about successes on projects, leadership, management, process improvements, etc. For instance, mentioning increased sales after conducting analysis and uncovering critical business issues that were solved would be items that can be mentioned here. Quantifiable metrics would be helpful here as well. If you have at least three bullet point items that can featured, then having these sections in your resume makes perfect sense. [Omitting information] This author included work experience dating back to 1991. You do not need to list your entire work history on a resume, particularly employment that dates back 15-20 years. The only time you should list a position is if you have been employed by the same company your entire career or if there is something relevant in the past position that will work to your advantage. The author need not include mention of a high school diploma and should remove the graduation date since it was thirty years ago.
