If you are interested in switching to a new job, then you are going to need a great resume to capture the attention of prospective employers. Summary should be in paragraph form
There are numerous sections of your resume that should utilize lists where each individual point is given its own separate line. However, the summary is the one place where you want everything formatted as one cohesive paragraph. On this sample resume, you would want to correct this section by putting all the points together instead of breaking them up on separate lines.
Maximum of eight bullet points for any individual position under work history
You want to provide an ample amount of material for any given position you have worked at in the past, and generally, the rule is to have between five and eight bullet points for each job. This person worked as a human resource manager at Sears Holdings Corporation, but she has listed 13 bullet points underneath it. That is far too many, so she would want to combine several points together if possible or eliminate points that are not too impressive or relevant to the job she wants to get now.
Use past tense for jobs you no longer work at
On this sample resume, we see that she no longer works at Sears Holdings Corporation, so the points should be written in the past tense. They are not and this is a grammatical error that needs to be corrected. The list under human resource manager should be written like this:
Conversely, if you were describing a job that you do currently work at, then you would want each bullet point written in the present tense.
Be mindful of gaps in your employment
A gap in your employment is not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be a red flag for employers, so you should be prepared to talk about it during an interview. This sample resume has a huge gap between 1997 and 2008, so she will need to say what exactly she was doing during that time. You should never lie about why there is a gap, but generally speaking, there are plenty of acceptable reasons why it may be there. You may have gone back to school for a while or maybe you did work during that time but are choosing to focus on the previous jobs you have had that are most relevant to the job you want now. A solid explanation is all that is needed to alleviate any concerns in the employers mind.
