Before you print out your resume, fold it up perfectly and mail it off to potential employers on the nicest resume paper you can find, make sure to look it over for commonly-made mistakes. Don’t use brackets anywhere on the resume
Punctuation and bullet points are commonly used on a resume to create a sense of clarity, but brackets are generally not used and, as exemplified in this resume, can create confusion instead of clarity. Nalini uses brackets around series of words and numbers. Instead, she needs to make sure to leave them out completely.
Write numbers correctly
Numbers have their own set of rules that need following on a resume. All numbers through nine should be written out in word form, and all numbers above 10 should use numerals unless the number begins a sentence, in which case word form is appropriate. Nalini doesn’t follow these rules in her professional summary, so she needs to change her numbers to reflect these rules.
Make sure the professional summary is long enough
Nalini does a good job of discussing valuable traits, skills and experience in her professional summary, selling herself as the best asset to the company she wants to work for. However, this section should be at least four lines and no more than six lines. Nalini only uses three lines, so she needs to write at least one more sentence to flesh this section out.
Set up the education entries correctly
Whether in progress or completed a decade ago, education is necessary to add on a resume. This applicant does include her ongoing certification program, but she formats it incorrectly. Each education entry should lead with the school, the school’s location, the degree program and the date of completion. If the program is not yet completed, then in progress or an anticipated graduation date can be included. No coursework relevant to the program should be listed. Remove all color from resumes aimed at traditional jobs
Color is only acceptable for more creative positions. However, when it comes to traditional jobs, such as teacher, doctor or human resources, color should be left out, and applicants should opt for black and white. Nalini accomplishes this for the most part, but she does include blue text in the skills section. This makes the resume look less than professional, so it needs to be removed.
Don’t assume an employer knows where you’ve worked
When writing a resume, an applicant needs to make sure they give the location for every job they’ve worked. Full addresses are not necessary, but cities and states are always required. Nalini includes a street address, but she forgets to give employers the city and state to which those streets belong. To fix this, she needs to ensure each job is given their city and state.
