Avoid using color in a resume for traditional jobs
When building a resume, color may seem exciting and eye-grabbing. For traditional jobs, however, such as teaching or jobs in the medical field, it is important to stick to black and white. These colors come across as more professional in traditional fields. Suzette would need to remove the red from her resume to fix this issue.
Put licenses section below education section
The top portion of the resume should only include the very best information, and licenses are not included. This section should be placed below the education section, or inside of it if there are less than three entries. This applicant has three entries, so she just needs to move the section down.
Use keywords only in the skills section
The skills section is designed to showcase quick snippets of information to an employer scanning a resume. These pieces of information should be keywords of your best qualifications. This applicant writes out full sentences in the skill highlights section, which is more appropriate for the professional summary or experience section. To fix this, she needs to choose keywords from her statements instead. WRONG: Skill Highlights
RIGHT: Skill Highlights
Write current job duties in present tense
If an applicant is still working, all of those duties should be written in present tense on the resume. Past tense should only be used for older employment. This applicant uses past tense for ongoing duties, so she needs to fix this by changing her verbs to present tense.
Always use bullet points to separate information
Cleanliness can be seen on a resume without one word being read. The absence of bullet points in the experience section of this resume makes it look like a mass of information with no road map. To amend this, Suzette would need to make sure each of her duties are given a bullet point and placed in a vertical list. WRONG: Pharmacist Henry Ford Health System Provided inpatient pharmacy services including unit dose, intravenous admixtures and chemotherapy, medication reconciliation, aminoglycoside/vancomycin dosing, anticoagulation dosing and renal dosing at three different system hospitals. RIGHT: Pharmacist Henry Ford Health System
