Whether you’re switching jobs or going back to work after a long break, a resume needs to be polished before it is sent to any employer. Avoiding commonly-made mistakes is a great way to make a fantastic first impression, so we’ve asked our experts to examine this homemaker resume sample for errors. Apply their solutions to make the most of your years of experience.
Take advantage of the summary section
Even though Meghan has a long gap in her employment history, she should take advantage of the professional summary section. In this section, she needs to write about the experience, education, and skills that she can bring with her to a new job. It should be at least four lines but no more than six.
Don’t include unofficial employment
Being a homemaker is an important job, but because it isn’t official employment, it shouldn’t be listed on the resume. This is good information to include in an interview or mention in the professional summary. Instead, the experience section on Meghan’s resume should begin with her time in the military.
Use five to eight points in experience section
Including details in the experience section is important because this is the section where an employer gets to learn the specifics of your training. However, this area can be problematic if there are too many or too few details. An applicant should aim for five to eight details per job. Meghan includes a few too many points on her job entry in the military. She needs to fix this by removing some points.
Create an accomplishments section and include awards
Another way Meghan can reduce the number of details in her experience section is to create an accomplishments section with at least three of her points. She has a few notable and measurable achievements that fit appropriately in this section. She should also include the awards she lists at the bottom of her resume, using two columns to fit it all. She will save space, too, while following these resume rules. RIGHT:
Formatting the education section
The education section is fairly formulaic. Each educational program should be placed in reverse chronological order and include school name, school location, program name or degree earned, and the year of completion. Coursework relevant to the job may be listed. GPAs can be listed for recent graduates. Meghan includes too much or duplicate information and uses color, as well as gives inconsistent dates. She should remove irrelevant details and color while providing consistent dates to give this section a polished look.
