Do Not Confuse Accomplishments With Experience
The accomplishments section of a resume should highlight important achievements that you have made and things you have accomplished that make you stand out as an employee. This is not the place to go over work experience or other experience – paid or unpaid. In this resume sample, the accomplishments section is filled with past work experience. The applicant lists work in a grant program, mentorship and her own business. These are all things that would go under the experience section. There are a few points, though, that could be used to create a proper accomplishments section. Here is a revision of the section: Accomplishments *Obtained grant funding for a new program called Aroma Care *Developed and taught a series of free classes through the Kingman Community Center *Designed a 500-hour curriculum with published Path to Perfect Health textbook *Contributed articles to many syndicated newsletters and newspapers *Established wellness program seminars and training courses for corporations *Trained and certified many holistic health practitioners and wellness day spa owners *Volunteered to speak in high schools concerning health, stress and addiction *Created self-care treatments to ease the symptoms of chronic disease for in-home use *Developed and Incorporated course work in nutrition, massage therapy, aromatherapy, relaxation therapies, stress management and business building *Organized a holistic healing summer day camp for children Notice how the revised accomplishments section now focuses on outstanding achievements of the applicant. It is highlighting things that will help make her stand out from other applicants.
Use Present Tense If You Are Currently Working in a Position
In the experience section, make sure you are using present tense when presenting the job you are currently working and past tense for those jobs you have already left. In this resume sample, all the jobs are listed with a current ending date, meaning the applicant is still working in these positions. However, all the information is presented in past tense. It needs to be changed to present tense. Here is a revision of one of the entries to change it to present tense: February 2013 to Current Holistic Chiropractor Kingman, AZ Holistic Health Care Practitioner *Integrate aromatherapy, relaxation treatments and nutrition to help support the natural healing process and reduce: stress, chronic pain, digestion disorders, sleep disorders and depression *Conduct self-care counseling sessions during relaxation therapies *Tailor self-care programs that rendered consistent, measurable results within 3 clinical visits with 80% of overall client base
Make Sure Formatting in Each Section Is Consistent
The formatting you use in your resume helps to make it look professional. Overall, you want a clean looking resume that is easy to read. It is important when formatting that you make sure it is consistent. In the education and training section of this sample resume, the entries arent presented in a consistent manner. Some entries have the coursework presented in a sentence, others have the coursework presented in a list and some entries have no coursework listed at all. While it isnt required to list coursework, if you do, make sure you list it for every entry and that you use either a list format or a paragraph format for all entries. Be consistent.
