When you have a resume to write, it might seem like there are so many ways to mess up and make a simple error. Avoid any type of To Whom It May Concern
If you take a look at this sample resume’s summary, then you will notice that it starts off pretty good, but then it goes into what is essentially a cover letter. Your cover letter should be an entirely different document, and you should never combine it with your resume. The purpose of your resume is to provide an overview of the experiences, personality traits and talents you possess that you believe make you qualified for this new role. A cover letter is meant to express your further interest in coming in for an interview, so never just put that letter within the resume.
It can be beneficial to include a section dedicated to your skillset
Most job descriptions will have a list of skills the employer is looking for in an ideal candidate, and you can include some of those skills, along with any others, within their own section. It is quite common to include a skills section between the summary and work history portions of a resume, and this sample is missing one. It is fairly straightforward to write, and you want to have somewhere between three to eight skills per column, and you can have a maximum of two columns. This is just something to consider when crafting your own resume.
Give each responsibility you had for a job its own marker
The way in which this person describes her work responsibilities at each position is very unique. There is one bullet point followed by paragraph of information, which is incorrect. Instead of having a paragraph where every individual point is separated by a period or semicolon, you would simply want to put each one on a different line and begin it with a bullet point. If we were to use her job at North Jersey Community Research Initiative as an example, it should look like this:
Make all information as clear as possible
This sample resume’s education section says that she went to Rosewood High and Marcy College, but there are no dates given for when she went to each one. She could have graduated decades ago, or she could still be in progress of earning her degree. We also see the words Communications and English, but nothing else is given to indicate which one is a major and which one is a minor or if she was a double major. You want to make every last thing on your resume crystal clear, so there is no confusion. Another thing to consider for your own education section is to include relevant coursework.
