A resume may seem like a simple concept. You write all of your employment history and education information down on paper and hand it to an employer. However, your resume can say much more about you if it is full of mistakes, so our experts have compiled a series of solutions for this high school graduate farmhand resume sample to help you perfect your resume.
Write a professional summary
Even the newest to the career field should write a professional summary at the top of the resume. This section gives applicants the chance to show off their best and most relevant experience, traits and accomplishments that make them the best candidate. Benjamin doesn’t include this section at all, so he would need to write four to six lines of his best assets.
Never include religious or political information unless relevant to the job
Unless an applicant is applying for a political or religious position, all mentions of religious affiliations or ceremonies are better left off the resume. Benjamin includes religious ceremonies in the accomplishments section that are both irrelevant to his career field and incorrectly placed on the resume. It should be removed completely.
Make sure the accomplishments section only contains accomplishments
If an applicant has any notable achievements or awards, the accomplishments section is there to note them in an organized way. However, many applicants include irrelevant information that would be better suited in another category or deleted. Benjamin lists inclusion in various competitions that he didn’t win in his accomplishments section. He should instead delete this information, as well as the years he lists with them. WRONG: Accomplishments FFA: 2009-Present
Gateway Gun Club: 2012-Present
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 1994-Present
Place the education section at the bottom of the resume
Education is great to list, but it should only be listed first on a resume if it is the most impressive or representative of your skills. This applicant puts it first, but has more relevant experience and training that need to go before it. In this case, education needs to go below experience.
Use periods at the end of experience details
The right punctuation makes for a cleaner and more professional resume. Periods should always be placed at the end of sentences in the experience section, even if they are fragments. Benjamin leaves this punctuation off, so he needs to correct this error before handing it in to an employer.
Ensure spacing is even throughout the resume
One of the most noticeable aspects of a resume without one word being read is formatting. If formatting is off, it’s instantly recognizable, and an employer may see that as a sign that an applicant didn’t take the time to perfect his resume. Benjamin has too much space between his accomplishments section and experience section. He needs to fix this by removing the space.
