One of the best ways you can create a better resume for your job search is to read other people’s resumes and listen to what the experts have to say. We had our experts go through a high school graduate resume sample to see what areas can be made better, and there is quite a bit to learn from this particular sample. Go through these tips carefully, so your resume can be vastly better.
Start your resume with a summary
Although there are certain sections of your resume that can be optional, one section you should definitely include is a summary at the very beginning. The purpose of beginning your resume with a summary is that it gives the reader a general overview of what skills and other attributes you have to offer the company. In essence, it should be a 30-second pitch to the employer about why you are the best fit for the job. This will make the employer excited to see what else you have to offer.
Minimum of three highlights
Adding a section dedicated to your skillset is a very good idea because it allows you to fill the page with certain keywords a hiring manager is going to be searching for. It should not be too difficult to have at least three skills to put in this section, and if we look at this sample resume we only see these:
One very easy thing you can do to reach that minimum is break up one of the points like this:
We can also eliminate the use of the word I because an employer does not want to see complete sentences in this section. He or she just wants to see your skills.
Your accomplishments should actually be notable
Having a section titled Accomplishments is optional, but it can be a great way to highlight certain aspects of your past employment. However, if you are going to include a portion like this, then you want to be sure that the achievements you list are detailed. This resume sample has the following listed underneath Accomplishments:
It is great the she goes above and beyond the line of duty, but she should be way more specific. What exactly did she do to go beyond what her typical job functions were? Those are the details an employer wants to see.
Use bullet points for Experience section
Many people make the mistake of writing about their previous work experiences using paragraphs, and that is a huge error. You should instead be using bulleted lists. Therefore, if we were to reformat the material given for her time working at Strike Force of New Jersey, then it would look like this:
Proofread before submitting
We copied and pasted the material given on the sample resume, but there are quite a few spelling errors that need to be fixed. First, i needs to be capitalized to be I. For the second bullet point, personal is incorrect, and it should instead be personnel. These are tiny things to correct, but every little detail counts on your resume, so make sure you take the time to read through yours carefully before sending it in for a job application. By keeping a few rules in mind, you will be in a much better position to send in a more impressive resume to potential employers.
