If you are entering the job market after a long absence, then your resume could be severely out-of-date and require some fairly big changes. There are certain items to include and exclude from a professional resume in order to impress a hiring manager, and you should follow the tips offered by our experts. They went through a high school English teacher resume sample to see what needs to be corrected.
Do not say why you left past positions
This sample resume states that she has plenty of experience as a teacher, but she has been out of the workforce for a while due to being a stay-at-home mom. That is a perfectly good explanation for having a large gap in employment, but your resume is not the place to talk about why you left certain jobs in the past. That is information that can be brought up during an interview, but for your resume, you want the focus to be on why you are most qualified for the job.
Include a Skills portion
It is recommended that you include a part of your resume that contains a bulleted list of all your various skills. These can be soft skills that are transferrable to virtually any position or specific tasks you are efficient in performing. This sample does not have anything like this, but it would be a very good idea to add it. Generally, you want to have three to eight bullet points in your list, so it could just be something simple like this:
Experience section should contain bulleted lists describing your duties and achievements
Arguably, the most important part of any resume is the portion that describes your professional experience because this will tell a hiring manager whether you have the skills necessary to excel at this new position. You do not want to be sparse with the information you provide, and every position you have ever held should have at least five bullet points that describe your various responsibilities. This sample resume only has two jobs, and each one is only given a single sentence. This writer would need to do a lot more work in order to give a more comprehensive picture of what she actually did at both those jobs.
You can exclude dates from Education if you want
This is an optional rule, but many people choose to do it so an emphasis is not placed on their age. You can remove the dates of when you graduated from college or high school, so an employer does not necessarily know how old you actually are. You can choose to do so if you would like, but it is acceptable to simply exclude it. This rule does not apply to the Experience section, and you should always include dates for that part.
Remove part titled Professional Value Offered
This sample resume is unique in the sense that the writer chose to include a section called Professional Value Offered. It is one long paragraph that goes over all the points regarding why she is the best fit for this job. The problem is that it should not be included on a resume. This is material that would be better suited for a cover letter, which is something that should be completely separate from the resume. Additionally, she could also move some of those points to other sections of her resume to fill up Experience. You never know who you might be going up against for a new position, but you should be ready for anything by having a stellar resume by your side.
