A resume is so important when searching for a job, seeking advice from the experts is a good idea. That is why LiveCareer has tips and tricks to help you create a strong resume. Take a look at this heavy equipment operator resume sample to see what common mistakes others have made so you can avoid making them yourself.
Start with a summary
The most significant issue this resume sample suffers from is its lack of a summary. Always begin your resume with a summary that highlights some of your abilities, experiences, professional traits, and what unique benefits you can bring to the table. Your summary should usually be about four lines long and cover a wide variety of topics. This is going to be the first thing employers read, and it may be as far as they ever get unless you immediately sell them. This is why your summary is so important and why it is vital that you start strong.
Polish your skills section
After you complete your summary, a highlight of your skills should come next. This should take the form of two columns of three or four bullets each. This resume sample includes excellent content in its skills section, but note that it is slightly too long and it has unnecessary gaps between each point. The concept of how long is too long is subjective, but with the gaps and numerous bullet points together, it is safe to say that this section takes up too much space on the page. It may be remedied simply by fixing the spacing, or it may be best improved by also shortening it to eight points total.
Format your experiences
The rest of your resume is structured to get readers to your experience section, which means this is the part that is going to be doing most of the selling. It is important that your formatting is perfect, so it does not distract from the actual content of your experiences. Notice that there is inconsistent spacing in this section, both between individual bullet point and between different positions. Even more important than having the correct formatting is having consistent formatting, otherwise it looked unprofessional. A few of the points should also be extended or altered to start with a strong action verb. If you put it all together, it may look like this: Crew supervisor /Crew member 02/2013 to Current Roadmark Corporation 3 Mauney Court Columbia Sc
Length and spacing
Finally, to really take this resume to the next level, attention must be given to the overall spacing issues and incorrect length. Individual examples of spacing problems have been provided, but the issue extends through the entire document, including between sections. The resume sample is also too long. Unless you are trying to capture information from more than 10 years of experience, your resume should fit entirely on a single page. Fixing the spacing in this resume will help shorten it, but keep in mind that a summary also needs to be added without making the resume bleed onto a second page. The skills, education, and possibly experience section needs to be shortened or streamlined to make room for the summary. To improve your search for a job, make sure your resume is up to the high standard that employers have.
